Cellulite

What is Cellulite?

Contrary to popular misconception, being overweight is not the single cause of Cellulite. Cellulite is a natural phenomenon affecting mainly females and is caused by the hormone Oestrogen. It is commonly called the ‘Orange Peel Effect’. Cellulite even affects males! But males tend to have only minor cellulite as they have less oestrogen in their bodies. However, a lack of exercise, overeating, diet [excessive carbohydrates, salt, not enough fibre, protein etc] and obesity also contribute to this problem.

celluite.pngOne of the basic biological functions of Oestrogen is the breakdown of collagen. Oestrogen stimulates collagenase formation in the fibroblasts, and the collagenase then starts to break down the muscle fibres. When collagen is relaxed or weakened, the ‘Fascia’ or the superficial connective tissue that lies immediately beneath the skin’s surface, weakens and gives way, and the fat bulges upward creating a wavy surface. It is therefore safe to conclude that the fundamental cause of cellulite is a weakening in the connective tissue.

Causes of Cellulite

Hormones play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite, Oestrogen being the most important. It seems to initiate, and aggravate cellulite. Collagenase formation is stimulated in the fibroblasts by Oestrogen and this collagenase then proceeds to break down the muscle fibres like Collagen.
The connective tissue in a woman’s body is known to be weaker than that of a male’s. When women put on weight, their fat cells or adipocytes expand and bulge upwards towards to surface of the skin giving the well-known ‘orange-peel’ look. This process is then aggravated by a slowing of circulation resulting in the stagnation of toxin and the reduction of nutrients within the structures. Men tend to escape this problem as their skin is a lot thicker, thus hiding the surplus fat below. The weakening or the breaking down of Collagen, combined with the thinness of the skin makes this problem predominantly a feminine one.

Getting rid of cellulite

Over the years, there has been no shortage of ‘sure-to-work’ cellulite treatments offered on the market. Yet, few treatments have proved successful and are able to stand strong against close examination. We know that the primary causes of cellulite are poor blood and lymph circulation, excess weight gain, hormonal imbalances (mainly an excess of oestrogen) and toxin build-up from a poor diet.

Dieting alone cannot eliminate cellulite. Cellulite deposits are “locked away” and cannot be readily used as fuel for the body. Therefore, for the best results, Bio-Dermology provides safe, effective, non-invasive treatments for the reduction of cellulite.

Classification of Cellulite

Grade 1 - No clinical symptoms, but histopathology detects underlying anatomical changes.

Grade 2 - The skin shows pallor, lower temperature, and decreased elasticity after compression or muscular contraction. There is no visible "orange peel" roughness to the skin. Additional anatomical changes are detected by histopathology.

Grade 3 - Visible "orange peel" roughness to the skin is visible at rest. This is the "canonical" grade of cellulite. Thin granulations in the deep levels of the skin can be detected by palpitation. All Grade 2 signs are present, with further anatomical changes are detectable by histopathology.

Grade 4 - All Grade 3 symptoms are present, with more visible, palpable, and painful lumps present which adhere to deep structures in the skin. The skin has a noticeable dimpled, wavy appearance. Additional histopathologic changes are detected.
