Like the estimated 45 million or more people around the world battling the life-long problem of rosacea, you probably have a drawer full of products and medications which, alone or in combination, have been less than satisfactory to reduce the symptoms you’re struggling with. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disorder/disease affecting the faces of men and women, which may start with rosy cheeks, red patches, full face flushing, and dry skin. This imbalance of blood flow may improve temporarily (go into remission). But often a worsening of symptoms, advancing to purplish-red cheeks or chin, solid red pimples, nose swelling or nasal bumps, follows it. Once this dries, new skin cells are replaced without the blood pigment stains. You may have been prescribed one or more topical or oral antibiotics more for their anti-inflammatory properties. The problem is that while they may form part of effective treatment, many people don’t enjoy the prospect of using anti-biotics more or less “for life” and become concerned about its numerous side-effects. Our clients often complain of itching, burning, watering eyes and nose after using many products on the market today. For clients with such ultra-sensitive skin, Clinical Skincare, together with A Natural Difference has put the smiles back on their faces and finally they’re feeling comfortable in the skin they’re in! Our therapeutic concentrates are of the highest purity, to soothe, heal and rebuild. They work extremely well in conjunction with traditional treatments such as topical and oral antibiotics. They have a great consistency, absorption rate and are fragrance-free for a smooth finish. They leave the skin feeling moisturised and nourished without leaving the skin feeling greasy or clogged. Signs and SymptomsRosacea is a chronic condition generally affecting the skin of the face and often on the neck and upper chest. In around 50% of cases it involves the eye area as well. It tends to occur more frequently in people with fair skin, and is sometimes considered to be an inherited trait. Rosacea signs and symptoms can include:
Pre-rosacea: rosacea may begin as a simple tendency to flush or blush easily, then progress to a persistent redness in the central portion of your face, particularly your nose. This redness results from the dilation of blood vessels close to your skin's surface. This phase may sometimes be referred to as pre-rosacea. Vascular rosacea: as signs and symptoms worsen, vascular rosacea may develop — small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks swell and become visible (telangiectasia). Your skin may become overly sensitive. Rosacea may also be accompanied by oily skin and dandruff. Inflammatory rosacea: small, red bumps or pustules may appear and persist, spreading across your nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. This is sometimes known as inflammatory rosacea. In severe and rare cases, the oil glands (sebaceous glands) in your nose and sometimes your cheeks become enlarged, resulting in a build up of tissue on and around your nose (rhinophyma). This complication is much more common in men and develops very slowly over a period of years. When the eyes are affected (in over 50% of cases) sufferers may experience ocular rosacea which is a burning and gritty sensation in the eyes. Rosacea may cause conjunctivitis, where the inner skin of the eyelids become inflamed or appear scaly. Causes and Risk FactorsThe cause of rosacea is unknown. There are several theories, the most common being overactive facial blood vessels. Inflammation, genetic predisposition, environmental and vascular factors are also taken into consideration. Rosacea may sometimes be aggravated by facial creams or oils, and especially by topical sterols. Anyone with sensitive skin, and most especially rosacea patients, must choose cleansers, moisturizers and other facial products with great care and an understanding of the ingredients. Rosacea and sensitive skin is like a mirror, which quickly reflects all the effects of emotion, stress, fatigue, over-exposure to the sun, cold, tobacco, illness, drugs and chemicals, soaps and pollution. Other factors can make the flare-ups of rosacea worse by increasing blood flow to the skin’s surface. These include alcohol, temperature extremes, hot drinks, alcohol, coughing, spicy foods, strenuous workouts and certain drugs (e.g. blood pressure medications). TreatmentSo far, the medial and skin therapy professions have been unable to find a way to completely eliminate rosacea. However a regular and effective skin care regime using Clinical Skincare with A Natural Difference products can significantly reduce the symptoms, to the point where thankful sufferers can once again face the world. Our focus is on keeping the condition under control whilst improving the overall appearance of your skin. We encourage our clients to keep a note of which triggers are causing flare-ups.
