According to the QLD Radiation Safety Act 1999; All persons who operate a Class 4 laser apparatus must hold an appropriate ‘Use Licence’ issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999.

According to the QLD government, a Class 4 Laser is any device that:

a) Could reasonably be used to carry out diagnostic, therapeutic or cosmetic procedures involving the irradiation of human beings.

(b) When energized, is capable of emitting an amount of non-ionizing radiation higher than the accessible emission limit for a class 3B laser for the relevant period, stated in, and measured in accordance with, the laser standard

The AS/NZS 2211.1 defines a Laser Safety Officer as one who is competent in the evaluation and control of laser hazards and has responsibility for oversight of the control of laser hazards.

To hold a Laser Possession Licence and/or ‘Use Licence’, all applicants must provide evidence that they have satisfactorily completed a laser safety course, specifically approved by the Director, Radiation Health Unit.

CSHE Australia offers Laser Safety Officer’s Courses that have been approved by QLD Radiation & Health and are accredited for clinics owners and staff wanting to offer various Laser & IPL treatments. This course provides an in-depth view of the duties of a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and requirements of The Radiation Safety Act 1999. Please ask for a brochure on the various courses available that may be suitable for your particular needs.

Who Should Attend?

  • People who wish to possess any laser apparatus for Cosmetic purposes.
  • People who wish to obtain a radiation safety officer’s certificate required by all possession licensees and their staff who wish to obtain a ‘Use Licence’ involving the operation of laser apparatus for Hair Removal 
    • Code: #ED054 (Standard LSO Course)

    • Registration Fee per person $550.00

    • Course Length: 1.5 Days


  • If you already possess a Standard LSO Certification and wish to use Laser apparatus to do Vascular, Skin Rejuvenation, Collagen stimulation, Tattoo Removal, Pigmented Lesion treatments and/or Non-Invasive Fractional Laser Resurfacing you will need to complete the extension course.
    • Code: #ED125 (Prerequisite of Standard LSO Course Code: #ED054)

    • Registration Fee per person $550.00

    • Course Length: 0.5 Day


  • If you wish to complete both parts together, you will be given Certification for both courses with the following Code
    • Registration Fee per person $1,100.00

    • Course Length: 2 Days

Minimum Qualifications Required

Also stated in the Act, Persons seeking a licence to use laser apparatus are required to possess a working understanding of biology, physiology, pathology, anatomy of skin, types of skin lesions, wound healing, scar management and pain management.

Applicants are therefore required to have:
  • Beauty Therapy Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 1 year practical experience
  • Enlisted or Registered nurse
  • Past Nursing Experience
  • Medical Assistant, Beauty Therapy students or Massage Therapist
  • Clinic owners with equivalent experience or currently a student of Tertiary Education
  • Business Owner wishing to apply for a possession licence
